Pop, pop, bam

04/08/2017 by Holly

That’s the sound of my knuckles cracking as I pull out the ‘ole blog…

The long and arduous winter is over!

{Mid-February: “Hey mom, what degrees is it?”

“Hot degrees.”}

It’s almost planting time!

{This is her new favorite spot. I don’t have the heart to tell her I can see her.}

There’s some news from these parts that the rabbits and I have been anxiously waiting to tell. First up, hope you enjoy the new blog design–consider it some bloggity Botox.

Second up: I haven’t seen a single rabbit in months. And the crimson clover and I are very glad about it. Now, I realize full well they are quite possibly just laying low until I get the edamame in, but oh how I hope you sent foxes. Could it be they’ll leave me alone this season? Nah…don’t want to get my hopes up…

And thirdly: I get to be the humorist for the new joegardener.com! WOOT!

Public Service Announcement: attention Joe Lamp’l: There are no funny memes of you on the internets. This is not acceptable. You face is plastered all over my PBS morning lineup. Your viewership needs to step. it. up. There are photos aplenty just begging for a meme! Oh my goodness I just Googled Christopher Kimball and There Are No Funny Memes Of Him Either!

THIS IS A PBS CONSPIRACY!!

{takes a second to google all her favorite NPR show hosts…}

joe gardener launches next Saturday, April 15th, because you will need some serenity now after that mad dash to the post office you know you always make on precisely that day, so Joe Lamp’l and his team are capitalizing on your distress and launching their sure to be beautiful, informative, inspiring, and {thanks to yours truly} uninformed, overly enthusiastic, idiosyncratic, kooky, TOTALLY HYSTERICAL content. The site is, of course, joegardener.com, and though it’s not officially live yet, you can sign up for the mailing list and a free e-book to hold you over while you wait.

And last, I promise, is that the winter was very productive for the latest project–an {as yet untitled} collaborative mommy humor essay project I’ve been working on. Y’all. I love it with my whole heart and hope I get to share it with you soon and very soon. Hopefully more info on that coming asap.

NOW.

I know you’ve been curled up in the fetal position binge-watching Step By Step reruns all winter wondering what was happening in my garden. {Sorry…most random TGIF I could remember…} The wait is over. Here we go:

Potatoes made it! I didn’t cover them one of our very few frost nights, and I was worried they had from dust to dust and all that, but they made it and they are looking great. I haven’t dug any yet, but soon, very soon.

The lettuces are gangbusters; we’ve been eating off of them every day for weeks. I just keep snipping and snipping to fill the salad spinner, and they just keep growing and growing. I can’t wait for the bitties palates to mature beyond rainbow Goldfish so that we can all enjoy this together.

Purple cauliflower is growing, but much more slowly than I imagined it would. This is my first time on cauliflower so maybe this is just how it rolls, but there aren’t any cauliflower heads inside the leaves yet. Preposterous and perplexing…and also purple…

And the peas are at it again, trying to take over my house and eat the dog. This time I think I’m going to keep them to the height of the poles and pinch the tops back, just to see what happens and also maybe to be mean a little. I only did one variety of English pea this season as last year’s sugar snaps and wando’s cross-pollinated and got all confused and the bitties knew not which pods they could eat and which they couldn’t…it was almost as crazy as that time Joe Lamp’l had no memes on the Google…OH WAIT THIS PROBLEM HASN’T BEEN FIXED YET.

Sheesh. We’re safe. I was beginning to think the suits at PBS had it in for us.

Oh, hi there

I'm Holly from zone 7b.
My veggies grow above ground where the rabbits help themselves, and the flowers grow in ground where the children help themselves. Sometimes I wish I was a pioneer. Then I move the clothes from the washer to the dryer and think better of it.
